i BRITE Questions & Answers

Controlled Whitening

Most people have discolored teeth. Some are more discolored than others. Dental whitening or bleaching can be used to correct this tooth discoloration and achieve a very beautiful smile.

The key to a "natural" look when whitening is maintaining the natural transparency of the teeth.

We have found the most effective results come from a controlled, in office, whitening process that lightens the darker teeth first and/or concentrates on discoloration within selected teeth. After that, all of the teeth are lightened being cautious not to over whiten them.

 Before After

In cases of extreme tooth discoloration crowns or veneers may be the only choice, but because of the relatively low cost of bleaching treatments, bleaching is nearly always worth a try. In many instances where veneers are going to be placed, it is necessary to whiten the underlying teeth first.

One Hour Teeth Whitening - i BRITE System

It's safe and very effective. This is usually accomplished in one to five visits. However, it is a precise, intricate process in order to protect the teeth and gums while at the same time controlling the whitening process to obtain the desired, natural looking results. We will take before and after photos so you, too, can see the dramatic change in your smile.

Prior to scheduling a chairside i BRITE whitening treatment, we will evaluate the condition of your teeth and decide if this is the best treatment for you. Cavities, leaking fillings, cervical abrasions and even certain medications/health conditions can affect the results. The tone of your teeth may affect the outcome. According to the American Dental Association, "yellowish-hued teeth will probably bleach well, brownish-colored teeth may bleach less well, and grayish-hued teeth may not bleach well at all." However, some grayish teeth bleach beautifully - it is hard to predict.

If chairside i BRITE whitening is for you, we recommend a cleaning prior to the actual whitening session. You will be asked to use a special toothpaste for 10-days to 2 weeks prior to your tooth whitening to enhance the results (increase the effectiveness of the whitening agent) and to reduce sensitivity. If you are not eligible for the chairside whitening or prefer an alternative, we can recommend Home Whitening Kits.

Home Whitening Kits

Some patients may not be candidates for chairside whitening, but will benefit from whitening via take home whitening kits. Shortly, your custom bleach tray will be ready for you to pick up. We provide you with a special bleaching agent that you put into the clear trays. With only 30-60 minutes of wear per day, our special bleaching agent removes stains from your enamel in a very short time without altering tooth structure or existing dental work in any way. After your teeth have reached the desired brightness, occasional supplemental treatment may be needed to maintain your new smile.

Side Effects of Tooth Whitening. If they occur, tooth sensitivity and irritation of the soft tissue are both temporary and should disappear in one to three days. To reduce or eliminate the sensitivity:

  • We supply you with a toothpaste that contain potassium nitrate. It's made for sensitive teeth and should sooth the teeth's nerve endings.

  • Use over the counter medication (i.e. Tylenol or Advil for a day or two.)

  • Ask us about a high fluoride product to help remineralize your teeth.

Note: Darker stains, such as those caused by antibiotics, are more difficult to whiten.

i BRITE Questions & Answers

What is i BRITE Cosmetic Teeth Whitening System?

It is a bleaching process that lightens discoloration of enamel and dentin. Our technology is clinically proven to whiten your teeth eight shades in one hour.

What can cause teeth discoloration?

There are many causes. The most common include aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea or tobacco. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.

Who may benefit from teeth whitening?

Just about anyone can benefit from tooth whitening. However, treatment may not be as effective or some as it is for others. Upon an oral exam, we can determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, including a shade assessment.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. As with any teeth whitening product, it is not recommended for children under 14 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.

Do the results last a long time?

By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. We recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, and touch-ups with a take-home gel. These are professional formula products designed specifically to keep your teeth their brightest. They are available through our office.

How does the i BRITE Cosmetic Teeth Whitening System work?

The light-activated whitening gel's active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As Hydrogen Peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching any colored substance while keeping the structure of the tooth unchanged. The light aids in activating the Hydrogen Peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth.

Is the In-Office procedure painful?

No. During the procedure, patients can actually watch television or listen to music. Many fall asleep. Some people experience temporary increased tooth sensitivity to cold during treatment. These symptoms disappear within 1-3 days after interruption or completion of the treatment.

How long is the procedure?

The entire procedure takes just over one hour. The procedure begins with a preparation period followed by one hour of bleaching. A five-minute fluoride treatment completes the procedure (we recommend a cleaning prior to the actual whitening session for best results).
